FMIC employees help flood victims in Badakhshan province

January 20, 2015

The faculty and staff at FMIC donated US$ 10,000 through a voluntary contribution of one day’s salary for the victims of the flash floods and landslide which occurred in the Shughnan District, Badakshan, Afghanistan. The donation was made to the local representative of FOCUS Afghanistan, the non-governmental organisation engaged in rebuilding the area.

The village of Darive was severely affected. The village, located partially over debris and rest on a river flood plain was home to 42 families comprising  318 individuals.

The floods destroyed farmlands, three water mills, three water intake irrigation canals, 260 trees, a bridge, three irrigation canals, each approximately 400 meters long and  300 meter long road. The funds donated by FMIC were utilized for reconstruction of one water intake to support the water supply system of community farmland. The project served as an effective incentive for the villagers to come together and build the damaged water intake and was completed in 45 days.

The irrigation infrastructures are important community assets which serve both the agriculture lands and the community forestry. The new canal will bring tens of hectors of wastelands to agriculture and forestry use. This will ultimately result in improving sustainable livelihoods and provide resilience to shocks both natural as well as manmade.
