Washing hands saves lives

July 8, 2014

Hand hygiene or hand washing is considered the most important measure to avoid the transmission of harmful germs and prevent health care-associated infections. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), thousands of people die around the world from infections acquired while receiving healthcare and a lack of proper hand hygiene remains the main cause for the transmission of disease.

Maintaining good hand hygiene continues to be a top agenda item in FMIC quality initiatives. Besides providing healthcare and awareness sessions to international visitors, FMIC is also promoting the importance of hand hygiene in the nearby communities and schools. So far different programmes have been arranged in surrounding schools to promote the concept of hand hygiene.

A similar session on hand hygiene practice was arranged at Ahmad Shah Bah-a-bah School near FMIC. Around 62 children, between the ages of 8 to 10 years, participated in this session.

The children enthusiastically participated in the session, where they learned proper hand washing techniques. One of the parents expressing his appreciation for such programmes arranged by FMIC said, “Conducting such programmes in schools is very useful for our children; it helps them get familiar with health issues at a very young age.  The good thing is that aside from learning themselves they want to teach others, even elders, when they come back home”.

The teachers of the school and the parents appreciated FMIC’s efforts for conducting such an instructive session. At the end of this session, small gifts were distributed to the children.
