Live Streaming of Open Heart Surgery Procedure

May 21, 2015

The French Medical Institute for Children initiated today live streaming of its surgical procedures for learning and capacity building of healthcare providers including doctors, nurses and medical students from different healthcare institutions across Afghanistan.

The first live stream of an open heart surgery was held today as part of a continuing medical education session. The surgery on a seven-year-old boy was led by Dr Najeebullah Bina, head of Paediatric Cardiac Surgery, FMIC, and streamed live to a group of 45 participants from FMIC and cardiologists from governmental and nongovernmental hospitals such as Ibn Sina Cardiac Hospital, Afghan Swiss, Poly Clinic; students from Kabul Medical University and Milli Medical University also logged on to the session. The surgery was also streamed live to Faizabad and Bamyan hospitals.  Dr Bina explained the procedure to the participants and also responded to their questions while performing the surgery.

Dr Sultan Mohammad, head of cardiology at Ibn Sina Cardiac Hospital was one of the session participants and expressed his satisfaction at the facilities provided by FMIC for cardiac surgeries. “We at Ibn Sina Cardica Hospital look forward to FMIC conducting short term trainings on open heart surgeries and other related areas for our cardiac surgeons.”

Dr Bina also expressed his eagerness to help Afghan people and train local doctors. He stated that this journey has just begun and asked for ideas and support in achieving more success in this field. “FMIC doors are always open for our colleagues from other hospitals,” said Dr Bina.

The session also included presentations before the surgery on Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA) and Roberts Syndrome, along with a case study on PDA Closure and Tetraphocomelia Cleft Lip and Palate Syndrome by Dr Aman Enayati, a cardiology resident.

At the end of the session, Dr Abdullah Fahim, Medical Director, FMIC thanked the participants. He appreciated the enthusiasm shown by the Afghan medical fraternity in learning and knowledge sharing. He thanked the cardiac team, IT and Marketing departments for organizing such a wonderful session.

FMIC is the first healthcare centre to provide open heart surgeries in Afghanistan with the first such surgery taking place in April 2006. In May of this year, the Institute achieved a milestone of 2000 successful open and closed heart surgeries.
