​​​​12 years of promoting evidence-based research and advocating for enhanced quality healthcare in Afghanistan​​

​​Kabul, Afghanistan November 17, 2022: FMIC organized its 12th Annual International Scientific Conference & 12th Quality Convention – continuing its tradition of constant efforts to nurture the culture of scientific research, knowledge cultivation and sharing evidence-based findings in healthcare. ​​

The theme of this years' conference was “Human Health, Quality and Research: Challenges and Opportunities". The opening ceremony was chaired by Mr Lee Hilling- Chairman FMIC Board. Other guests included Dr Eric Cheysson La Chaîne de l'Espoir, representatives from Ministry of Public Health (MoPH), Ministry of Higher Education (MoHE), Kabul Medical University (KMU), Aga Khan Development Network, La Chaîne de l'Espoir, and FMIC; representatives of embassies and INGOs, Directors of various public and private hospitals, researchers, scholars, FMIC doctors, management and media representatives. 

In his welcome address Mr Aziz Jan, CEO FMIC said that for the past 12 years, FMIC has been consecutively organizing the scientific conference and quality convention despite many odds that reflect the resolve of medical practitioners, researchers and scholars for improving indigenous knowledge and exchanging ideas with other fellows within and outside Afghanistan. He also underlined the role of technology in healthcare and knowledge dissemination mentioning that the conference was being attended virtually from six sites across Afghanistan, Tajikistan and Pakistan besides physical presence of around 300 participants at the FMIC auditorium.  

In her speech Ms Nathalie De Sousa, Deputy CEO, La Chaîne de l'Espoir & Member FMIC Board termed it a remarkable achievement for FMIC attracting researchers, scientists, academics, policy makers and health professionals from all over Afghanistan and from many countries on yearly basis. Keynote speech was presented by Dr Salman Kirmani, Associate Professor of Paediatrics and Medicine, and Chair (Division of Women & Child Health) Aga Khan University (AKU). He underlined the importance of nutrition specially for mothers ultimately resulting in well-nourished and healthy children hence a strong and healthy community.

In his address as chief guest of the conference, Mr Lee Hilling Chairman FMIC Board highly appreciated a vibrant presence of various stakeholders from the government and civil society. He admired the contribution of researchers and medical practitioners and for their continuous contribution and encouraged them to think deeply about evidence-based practice. A presentation was also made by FMIC-PGME resident during the opening ceremony. A total of 36 poster presentation were made which were visited by delegates during the who day.Scientific sessions were held parallelly in two rooms where  sessions were held in two halls of FMIC where researchers made their presentations followed by questions answer sessions. Certificate and tokens of appreciation were distributed amongst all presenters and session chairs. Dr Bashir Shakhizada, Medical Director and Director AKU Programs in Afghanistan shared concluding remarks and extended vote of thanks to all those who made the conference a great success.
