July 13, 2016

The book launch of “A  Place  of  Miracles” by Mr Lee Hilling took place at French Consulate General, New York USA on  July 13, 2016.

The event celebrated the release of a new book telling the story of one of Afghanistan’s most remarkable reconstruction success stories.  The story of a hospital where children’s lives have been saved and the story of an innovative four-way partnership between the Government of Afghanistan, the Government of France, the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) and the French NGO, La Chaîne de l’Espoir in Afghanistan.

Around 120 people attended the ceremony which included representatives of the New York Governor's office, the New York City Mayor's office and the New York City Council, United Nations, World Health Organization, civil society and academia. The Afghan UN Ambassador and French Counselor General also attended the ceremony and made heartfelt presentations.

Mr Lee Hilling presented the history of the non-profit hospital, collected in his book entitled "A Place of Miracles: The Story of a Children’s Hospital in Kabul and the People Whose Lives Have Been Changed by It".  The presentation highlighted the initiation of a state of the art medical facility in Kabul and the many lives saved.

“The FMIC responds to the critical need for essential health services in Afghanistan, through medical services and efforts to create a pool of qualified health professionals across specialisations,” Mr Hilling noted. “This achievement is due, in large part, to the commitment of each founding partner.”

Since the release of the book on August 8, 2015 in Kabul this has been the ninth event held for presentation of the book and the book is welcomed by the readers.

Mr Lee Hilling has been Chairman of FMIC’s governing body since 2006.
