April 10, 2017

The Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME) Programme at FMIC inducted the sixth batch of its residents. Four female and ten male residents from around a hundred applicants have succeeded to get entry in this prestigious programme. The residents coming from Badakhshan,  Bamyan,  Ghazni,  Kabul,  Kunduz,  Logar,  Paktia,  Parwan and Sar-e-Pul provinces have got their MDs from medical universities inside the country and as well as foreign countries like Khayber Medical College, Pishawor,  Pakistan and Bukovinian State Medical University, Ukraine.

This batch will follow their academic programmes in seven different specialties: paediatric orthopaedics, anaesthesiology, pathology, radiology, paediatric surgery, paediatric medicine and cardiology.

Diwa Yaqin, a resident of cardiology, excited for joining FMIC residency programme says that she is delighted for being part of the institution. She adds that the cardiology residency at FMIC is a programme of its kind and the first and I am determined to achieve the most out this programme.

The new batch of 14 have joined the current 40 residents onboard. 20 residents graduated from FMIC in 2016 and 2017 and are now employed at FMIC and other hospitals in Afghanistan.

FMIC began providing advanced education to doctors in April 2012 with support of Government of Canada, as a way of building and strengthening the local healthcare system.

The training programme of residents is well structured and in line with the requirements of Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) and AKU. The MoPH PGME Directorate constantly monitors the progress of the programme. There is a robust evaluation and promotion system for residents. The clinical training at FMIC is supplemented by workshops in research methods and thesis development by the AKU faculty. Senior residents spend three months at AKU Pakistan to get additional training in clinical management in their respective fields.
