​Good governance matters in healthcare also

​Healthcare providers from Kabul marking World Quality Day pledges for Quality and Patient Safety improvements

The French Medical Institute for Mothers Children (FMIC) holds the Sixth Quality Improvement and Patient Safety Convention to mark World Quality Day.

Quality care and Patient safety is a fundamental principle of healthcare. On the world quality day, FMIC being the first ISO certified hospital in Afghanistan continues to raise awareness about quality improvement and patient Safety issues amongst healthcare professionals in Afghanistan. This year’s theme is ‘Making Operational Governance Count’. 

“Good institutional governance reduces the risk of failures in services. Improving healthcare in Afghanistan is a priority for the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, and MoPH supports such initiatives give us opportunity to raise awareness of quality management systems and improve the quality of care provided”, said Dr Ahmed Jan Naeem, Deputy Minister of Public Health, while expressing his appreciation for commitment of FMIC in promoting quality and patient safety culture.

In recent years, developing countries have increasingly focused on improving quality care and patient safety. FMIC recognizes the important role good governance plays in quality healthcare delivery and that quality corporate governance is fundamental to any organization’s success; bringing consistency, effectiveness and efficiency to its service delivery structure. 

Chairman, Provisional Operating Committee of FMIC, Mr Lee Hilling, underlining FMIC’s commitment to quality care said, “Organisations can use the business management system to make improvements and better understand their business. I am grateful to see the focus that FMIC is placing on quality healthcare. The work that different departments of FMIC have presented reflects an environment of quality controls and patient safety built into FMIC’s services.” 

The Sixth convention brought together around 150 healthcare professionals from Kabul to discuss healthcare quality issues and propose their solutions. In this event, 15 quality projects on a wide range of quality related issues as Patients’ Safety at Private Health Facilities, Reducing Cost of Care and many other were presented. 

Dr Eric Cheysson, President of La Chaine de L’ Espoir, congratulated FMIC management for conducting an event of an international standard said that “La Chaine de l’Espoir, is committed to support FMIC initiatives to deliver quality health services by sharing with them best practices through contribution of long and short term medical missions.” 

World Quality Day was introduced in 1990 to increase awareness of quality internationally. It encourages individuals and organizations to focus on the importance of quality, growth and prosperity, and demonstrate their commitment to quality excellence.
