Against All Odds: Khadija's Battle with Nephrotic Syndrome
Two-year-old Khadija from Char Qala-e Chamandi, Kabul, arrived at FMIC in dire health and financial circumstances. Fatigued, dizzy, and swollen, she had also gained weight beyond the normal range for her age. Concerned, FMIC physicians recommended a urinalysis to investigate potential kidney failure. The results, however, revealed an even more alarming condition: nephrotic syndrome—a disorder causing her body to lose critical amounts of protein
through her urine.
A Life-Saving Intervention
Khadija's condition required immediate hospitalization for treatment and stabilization. However, the costs of her care were far beyond her family's financial capacity. In this critical moment, FMIC connected them with the FCDO project, which generously covered 40% of the expenses. Additional support from FMIC's Welfare Department brought the total financial assistance to over 50%, making her life-saving treatment possible.
Two Months of Dedicated Care
For nearly two months, Khadija remained at FMIC under the watchful eyes of skilled medical professionals. Her health steadily improved as her condition was managed, though a renal biopsy was essential for further diagnosis and long-term treatment planning.
A Grateful Farewell
When Khadija was discharged, her health had been significantly restored, and her family was overwhelmed with gratitude for the exceptional care and financial support they had received. The combined efforts of FMIC's dedicated team and the FCDO project not only saved her life but also provided her family with hope and reassurance during their darkest days.
Khadija's journey is a testament to the power of compassionate healthcare and community support. It underscores the critical need for initiatives like the FCDO project, which ensure that even the most vulnerable patients receive the care they desperately need.
