FMIC proudly celebrated World Prematurity Day with a special gathering that brought together former NICU patients who were born with very low birth weight and have fully recovered.
November 20, 2025 – The French Medical Institute for Mothers and Children (FMIC) proudly celebrated World Prematurity Day with a special gathering that brought together former NICU patients who were born with very low birth weight and have fully recovered, along with their parents, as well as doctors and staff from various institutes across Kabul
The event was marked by the joyful presence of NICU discharged neonatal patients who are now healthy and strong and kept moving around the auditorium, uplifting the spirits of all attendees. Professor Dr. Shabina Ariff, a renowned Neonatologist from the Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH), delivered the keynote lecture, providing important updates on neonatal care.
In addition to Dr. Ariff's insights, several state-of-the-art presentations were made. Dr. Tareq Rahimi, Medical Director and Chef of the Pediatric Surgery Department at FMIC, discussed advancements in neonatal surgery. Dr. Farzana Wali Jibran, Chef of the Obstetrics & Gynecology Department, emphasized the importance of antenatal care for high-risk pregnancies and the need for early referrals to tertiary care centers.
Dr. Farid Faqiri, a NICU Consultant, shared valuable information on follow-up care for NICU graduates, while Dr. Omid Faizi, Head of NICU, highlighted the comprehensive neonatal services provided at FMIC.
During the ceremony, FMIC leadership expressed their gratitude to the dedicated NICU doctors and hardworking nurses by presenting them with appreciation certificates.
The event concluded on a high note, with NICU
discharged infants cutting a celebratory cake, symbolizing hope, resilience,
and the progress of neonatal care at FMIC Kabul. The gathering also facilitated
meaningful interactions between parents and doctors, providing a platform to
discuss areas for improvement and to enhance the quality of neonatal care
throughout Afghanistan.
