On August 24, 2026, FMIC conducted a Continuing Medical Education (CME) session titled “Evaluation of Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms (LUTS)," presented by Dr. Mohibullah Amiri, Consultant Urologist at FMIC. The session was attended by 34 gynecologists and other healthcare professionals. The session focused on the comprehensive assessment, diagnosis, and evaluation of patients presenting with lower urinary tract symptoms.
During the presentation, Dr. Amiri highlighted the anatomy and function of the lower urinary tract, emphasizing the critical roles of the bladder and urethra in urine storage and bladder emptying. He explained that the proper functioning of the lower urinary tract depends on the coordinated activity of the nervous system, bladder muscles, pelvic floor muscles, and urinary sphincters.
The session provided a detailed review of common lower urinary tract symptoms, including urinary frequency, nocturia, urgency, dysuria, urinary hesitancy, intermittent urine flow, post-void dribbling, urinary incontinence, and hematuria. Dr. Amiri discussed the potential causes, risk factors, and clinical implications of these symptoms, highlighting the importance of accurate diagnosis and timely intervention.
Participants also learned about the different types of urinary incontinence, including stress, urgency, overflow, mixed, and functional incontinence, with particular attention to conditions commonly affecting women. The presentation emphasized the significance of obtaining a comprehensive medical, surgical, gynecological, and obstetric history to guide clinical assessment and treatment planning.
The session further covered key diagnostic approaches used in the evaluation of LUTS, including physical examination, pelvic examination, bladder diaries, uroflowmetry, assessment of post-void residual urine volume, and the evaluation of acute and chronic urinary retention. These tools play a vital role in identifying underlying causes and determining appropriate management strategies.
The educational program reinforced the importance of evidence-based assessment and multidisciplinary care in managing lower urinary tract disorders and improving patient outcomes. Participants actively engaged in discussions and gained practical insights into the evaluation and diagnosis of common urological conditions encountered in clinical practice.
FMIC remains committed to advancing medical education and supporting healthcare professionals through continuous learning opportunities, professional development initiatives, and the promotion of evidence-based clinical practice.
