December 24, 2025 – A Continuing Medical Education (CME) session titled “Clinical Neurology in Practice Workshop" was successfully held, led by esteemed professionals: Prof. Umapathi N. Thirugnanam, Senior Consultant at the Department of Neurology and the Singapore National Eye Centre; Ms. Zaitoon Shivji, Clinical Neurophysiologist; and Dr. Habibur Rahman, Consultant Neurologist at FMIC. The event attracted 40 participants, including neurology specialists and internal medicine practitioners.
The workshop commenced with a presentation by Dr. Habib ur Rahman, who covered a wide array of vital topics. Participants engaged in discussions about the importance of localization, the relationship between localization and urgency, as well as detailed aspects of cortical lesion localization, higher cortical dysfunction, subcortical localization, brainstem localization, and peripheral nerve and neuromuscular junction lesions.
Prof. Umapathi N. Thirugnanam presented the second session, which focused on neurological examination techniques, common neurological diseases in resource-limited settings, and nerve conduction studies. The high turnout of medical professionals and students underscored the strong interest in enhancing neurological skills in low-resource clinical environments. The session also included practical demonstrations on how to approach real patients.
The final presentation was delivered by Ms. Zaitoon Shivji, who introduced participants to Electroencephalography (EEG) and epilepsy. Key topics included the definition of EEG, disruptions of neuronal activity, treatment gaps and diagnosis gaps in epilepsy, and techniques for EEG recording and analysis. Participants learned about the utility of EEG and various forms of epilepsy, alongside the methodology for expert interpretation of epileptiform abnormalities. At the conclusion of the session, attendees expressed
their gratitude for FMIC's commitment to hosting such informative seminars.
They emphasized the importance of creating platforms for knowledge exchange
among healthcare professionals, which ultimately enhances their ability to
tackle complex medical issues, such as acute fatty liver in pregnancy.
