On September 19, 2023, FMIC, as part of the RISE project, held a session on “breast feeding” for the women of the neighborhood. Dr Karima Sadat delivered the presentation, and 130 community members took part. Project RISE is aimed at increasing community awareness on health issues, particularly in the neighboring community of FMIC.
The session covered topics such as definition of breastfeeding and exclusive breast feeding, best time to start breastfeed soon after birth, breast milk and the different types of breast milk, stages of breastfeeding, Dangers of feeding with artificial milk, lcomposition of the breast milk, benefits of breastfeeding for babies and mothers and the nutrition needs of the mother while breastfeeding. The facilitator also described different recommended positions of babies and mothers during breast feeding, explained how the mother knows the baby’s need for feeding and signs that confirm that the baby' stomachs is full. She also shared some myths and facts related to breast feeding.
The screening team then performed physical examination of the participants and took their history. On the basis of the same, some of them were referred to FMIC clinics for additional assessment, diagnosis, or therapy. Several of the participants were referred by the screening team to the gynecology, mammograms, internal medicine and the psychology division for mental health issues.
