Job summary

Provides safe, competent, individualized care to patients with care needs ranging from basic to complex, including imparting patient/family education and support.

Responsibilities​

Regular Responsibilities

  • Monitor normal pregnancies; carry out the examinations necessary for the monitoring of the development of normal pregnancies
  • Give the necessary supervision, care and advice to women during pregnancy, labor, and the postpartum period.
  • Identify and early detect antenatal complications such as;
  • Pre-eclampsia & Eclampsia conditions
  • Placenta previa
  • Placental abruption
  • Rhesus disease
  • Fetal malpresentation at term
  • Gestational diabetes
  • Venous thromboembolism
  • Oligohydramnios and polyhydramnios
  • Counsel on prenatal self-care, including nutrition, hygiene, breastfeeding and danger signs in pregnancy and childbirth.
  • Initiate resuscitation in case of cardiac arrest and provide appropriate care.
  • Obtain patient sampling safely.
  • Practice safe intravenous (IV) therapy and monitor patients' responses and take actions accordingly.
  • Demonstrates use of cardiotocogram (CTG) machine on patients and interprets cardiotocogram and takes appropriate actions as per unit based policy
  • Provide immediate post-partum, care including history taking, physical examination, teaching on breastfeeding and care of newborn.
  • Review patient's diagnostic finding, report in case of abnormality, perform intervention as requested and follow up
  • Care for and monitor the progress of the mother during the post-natal period. And provide all necessary advice to the mother on infant care to enable her to ensure the optimum progress of the newborn.
  • Identify and monitor stages of labor.
  • Perform history and physical examination of the labouring woman and diagnose labour.
  • Provide care and assist mother during labor and to monitor the condition of the fetus in utero by the appropriate clinical and technical means.
  • Manage labor using the labor care guide.
  • Conduct uncomplicated and spontaneous deliveries including where required an episiotomy. 
  • Recognize the warning signs of abnormality in the mother or infant which necessitate referral to a doctor and to assist the latter where appropriate.
  • Identify, manage and report obstetric emergencies according to the principles of basic emergency obstetric care such as,
  • Prolonged labour
  • Abnormal fetal presentation
  • Amniotic fluid embolism
  • Early detection of placenta
  • Umbilical cord prolapses
  • Premature rupture of membranes
  • Conduct active management of the third stage of labour for reduction of post-partum hemorrhage.
  • Identify signs of post-partum hemorrhage and able to manage.
  • Assist physician in minor procedures.
  • Adhere to the infection control practices and follow asepsis.
  • Administer medication (as allowed) safely, monitor patient responses to medication where indicated and report related incidents promptly.
  • Practice safe intravenous (IV) therapy and monitor patients' responses and take actions accordingly.
  • Initiate resuscitation in case of cardiac arrest and provide appropriate care.
  • Obtain patient sampling safely.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and skill regarding proper use of unit relevant equipment and their safe handling. Follow manufacturer's instructions related to operating, handling, cleaning and safety checks of all equipment/ instruments.
  • Transfer the patient safely for procedures or shift out to other areas as per criteria defined.
  • Provide timely, comprehensive and complete documentation meeting quality standards.
  • Report any untoward incidents and document in her shift before leaving the unit and submits to HM/ shift supervisor.

  • Long duty hours in emergency situation
  • Compliance with IC standard and policies to prevent from the exposure of infection.
  • Utilize appropriate body mechanics while performing any tasks.

Qualifications and Requirements

  1. Graduate of an accredited Midwifery Diploma program / bachelor of Midwifery
  2. Registered with the Afghanistan Nursing and Midwifery Council (ANMC)

Work experience

Minimum 2 years of midwifery experience in a hospital

  • Good communication and interpersonal skills and ability to build rapport with team members.

  • Ability to work with health care team and contribute ideas and solutions to resolve problems.
  •  Keeps him/herself well-groomed and observe the uniform code at all times.
  • Takes feedback from supervisors constructively and works to improve on the identified area
