Fighting with a Tumor at age 4

FMIC paediatric surgeons extracted a 6kg Wilms’ tumour

Habib Rahman is a 4-year-old kid who lives in a rural area of Baghlan province. He is the only son of his family andDSC_6615.JPG his father is daily-wage labour.

For a little boy like Habib Rahman, it was difficult to overcome a tremendous pain in his abdomen. The disgusting pain along with abdomen swelling made his parents take him to a hospital in Baghlan. He got some medicine, but he didn’t relieve the pain. His abdominal swelling, shortness of breath, and appetites loss were alarming and made his parents take him to Kabul.

At Kabul, they visited a public hospital and after some radiology imaging, a mass in his left kidney was observed and he was immediately referred to FMIC.

At FMIC, the doctors found out that the child’s condition is getting worse while the mass was so similar to a Unilateral Wilms’ tumour. After a long discussion amongst paediatric surgeons, they made the final decision to perform surgery and extract the large mass to save Habib Rahman’s life.

According to FMIC paediatric surgeon, Dr Tareq Rahimi, the size of the mass in his left kidney was too large and the organ (left kidney) had to be extracted as a last solution.

After a long and meticulous surgery along with complicated anaesthesia, the team could extract a mass with 6kg and the patient was immediately sent to the post-surgical ward under closed monitoring.

The surgeons sent the mass to the pathology department to identify the mass. According to the prediction, it was Wilms’Tumor, but fortunately, the tumour was not bilateral (in both kidneys).

Little Habib Rahman experienced a tough journey at age 4, but he was so fortunate that he could find a resort for treatment in Afghanistan. as his father said that getting a passport is impossible in this situation and it is lucky to find treatment in Afghanistan.
