A remedy which sustains hopes

Sabzina story.jpg
Mrs Sabzina is a 28-year-old mother from Badakhshan province. She takes care of her children and manages all daily chores. Her hardworking husband is a farmer; growing wheat and grains on the harsh lands of Badakhshan to make ends meet.

Mrs Sabzina was grappling with an unknown disease that affected her abdomen. She was feeling fullness and distention in her abdomen, and it was

affecting her movement tremendously. After 6 months, the distention got bigger, and she realized that something serious was brewing.

She visited a governmental clinic in Faizabad (the central city of Badakhshan), but due to lack of enough diagnostic facilities, she could not get the appropriate treatment. Then, she moved to Kunduz province, where the regional hospital in the northeastern part of Afghanistan is offering services to a huge population. The doctors advised Sabzina to visit Kabul for proper diagnosis and treatment since her disease required pathology and advanced radiological diagnosis.

Her husband decided to directly visit FMIC as he had already heard about the facilities available here. At FMIC, the general surgery team did a detailed CT scan of the chest and abdomen to decide on the next step.

The CT scans showed that a huge mass (18.2 cm by 38.2 cm) existed in the abdomen, but for a proper diagnosis, pathological examination was also performed.

Dr Mohammad Mujib Sakhi, Dr Rohullah Noorbig, General surgeons, and Dr Murtaza Tokhi, Assistant Surgeon at FMIC, decided to perform surgery to extract this mass.

Resultantly a huge mass originated from the left side of the abdomen behind the intestine and solid organ of the abdomen (retroperitoneum) involving left side kidney vessels. The surgery called "mass excision with enblock radical left nephrectomy (R0 resection)" relieved the patient from shortness of breath. A sample was sent to the histopathology team at FMIC. The pathological assessment showed that Sabzina was suffering from well-differentiated liposarcoma.

Finally, the doctors removed this mass, which weighed more than 13 kg, and Sabzina was able to continue her normal life.

Sabzina's family was not in a position to pay the full charges; she availed a large amount of welfare for the treatment. The patient welfare program of FMIC has been the ultimate solution to help the needy patients of Afghanistan since its establishment in 2006.
